U Vysh is me on my own: my songs, my lyrics, occasionally co-written. A separate story, started from nothing, with no connection to the trio or to covers. It sits where neo-soul, funk, alternative R&B, trip-hop and trap meet. Recorded at home and in a studio in Chiang Mai, where it is also mixed and mastered.

All by ear
I never went to music school. A few months with a school teacher on guitar, about a year of piano at home with a tutor — and then I picked out the first movement of the Moonlight Sonata by ear, and learning to read notation finally felt like too much effort. I still use keys when I write music, but to this day only by ear.
BEFORE THAT · JAZZ SPLASH · 2016 — 2020
A vocal trio from Tver
From 2016 until November 2020 I sang in Jazz Splash, a vocal trio from Tver. We drew on American retro jazz of the forties and its three-part harmony — the tradition where three voices fold into a single instrument. And we did not simply stand at the microphones: every programme had choreography, worked out ourselves or with a choreographer.
What we sang
The Soviet side — «Khoroshee nastroenie», «Konechno, Vasya», «Zholtye botinki», «Bud so mnoy». Alongside it American retro jazz: three-part harmony in the spirit of The Andrews Sisters, boogie-woogie and swing. Two popular traditions separated by an ocean but written in roughly the same years — by ear they meet far better than they look like they should on paper.
An incident
Once, just before going on stage, a long evening dress would not do up on me — I had put on weight. They sewed it shut with me inside it, behind the scenes. For the whole concert I never turned my back to the audience, and I left the stage walking backwards.

My own programme, my own stage
Alongside the trio I performed a great deal on my own — several dozen venues. At La Grotta in Tver it was almost a residency: concerts ran month after month, and on the posters I billed myself as «cover singer, lounge and jazz». There was also the Prichal, a restaurant on the river, where the programme was listed as «current hits, jazz, lounge». Some of the posters I drew myself, others were done by designers at the venues.
